A Delhi court has charged a doctor and two NGO workers with cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy for allegedly colluding to prepare a fake birth certificate of a girl in a 2010 infant trafficking case.
The court slapped the additional charge of conspiracy against the doctor while hearing a revision petition against an earlier trial court order.
The court had booked the doctor only for the offences of forgery and cheating.
Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Hemani Malhotra said that there is sufficient material on record to show that the doctor allegedly forged a number of documents to create a birth certificate of an infant. The infant was given to a woman who had not delivered any baby herself.
The court also booked two NGO workers who ran the orphanage, under the same charges.
The court also said that one of the workers was instrumental in inducing the beneficiaries to part with substantial amounts by promising to deliver legal adoption documents.
According to prosecution, Delhi Police Crime Branch acted on a tip-off and arrested the fourth accused, while he was selling an 8-9 month old infant to the NGO worker near Shivaji Vihar on December 19, 2010.
A FIR was registered against the two accused and the baby was rescued from them. Police found that the baby was to be allegedly sold for Rs 1.5 lakh. Police also rescued an 8-day-old girl from an Indian woman, who was a Kenyan resident. The accused had allegedly sold the child to her for Rs 1.8 lakh. Police also found another four-year-old girl in the accused’s house.
A girl, who was allegedly sold for Rs 50,000 in June 2010 by the NGO worker to a Delhi resident, was also rescued by police.
