Guwahati: Assam Police are keeping a close watch on several NGOs and madrassas across the state to unearth jihadi links, if any, DGP Khagen Sarma told the media on Wednesday.
A joint team of National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Assam Police has discovered valuable leads in the recent Burdwan blast case, Sarma added.
"We are scanning some NGOs, madrassas and other places which might have been used by jihadi elements as shelter and for funds," he said.
Sources said a Kerala-based NGO with strong links to the banned Islamic student organization, Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), is trying to spread jihadi operations in Assam. "SIMI has been found using many unusual channels to spread its tentacles across the country. Besides using madrassas, they are also operating under cover of NGOs, socio-cultural clubs and libraries to find new recruits and expand base," a source added.
These organizations are spreading religious extremism among the youth, the source said. "These NGOs get foreign funds to build madrassas. A lot of the money is also pumped to feed terror activities through hawala channels," it added.
Meanwhile, Assam Police and NIA have interrogated five persons, including a woman from the Chatala village of Barpeta district, some 125 km away from Guwahati. All are suspected of having close ties with Burdwan blast key accused Sahanur Alom and his wife who also hail from the same village. The NIA has seized a mobile phone used by Sahanur.
"The search for Sahanur is on," Sarma said.
He added that Assam Police have increased security measures at several vulnerable points. "The Kamakhya temple, the secretariat and several other places have been categorized as vulnerable. All protective measures are in place," Sarma said.
