Govt Sets Up Swachh Bharat Kosh To Attract CSR Funds

The government has set up a Swachh Bharat Kosh to attract funds from corporates and individuals to improve sanitation facilities, particularly in schools.

"Swachh Bharat Kosh (SBK) has been set up to attract Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from corporate sector and contributions from individuals and philanthropists," an official statement said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (2 October) launched the country's biggest-ever cleanliness drive Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan that is expected to cost over Rs 62,000 crore.

The objective of the mission is to achieve a Clean India (Swachh Bharat) by the year 2019, the 150th year of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Weilding A Broom

The Prime Minister today himself wielded a broom and swept pavement in Valmiki Basti, a colony of sanitation workers here. Even Cabinet Minister and senior bureaucrats participated in the drive and took pledge of cleanliness.

"Let us join Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan with a spirit of patriotism and fulfil Gandhiji's dream of a clean India," Modi said in a tweet.

Wielding the broom himself, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched 'Clean India' campaign joined by chief ministers, lawmakers, prominent personalities from various fields along with lakhs of countrymen in a drive that is expected to cost nearly Rs 2 lakh crore.

Asserting that "Swachh Bharat" mission is "beyond politics" and inspired by "patriotism", he invoked Mahatma Gandhi's vision of a "clean and developed" India as he formally kicked off the five-year-long campaign, which will cover 4,041 statutory towns, on the 145th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

The tech-savvy Modi even launched his own version of ALS ice bucket challenge, nominating nine eminent personalities including Sachin Tendulkar, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, industrialist Anil Ambani along with several actors like Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Kamal Hassan to spread awareness on the issue and asked them to continue the chain.

"A nation-wide effort will start on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2, 2014 to mobilise resources for improving sanitation facilities in the rural and urban areas, particularly, school premises," the statement added.

Clean India Mission: Govt To Fund Village Panchayats
Over 2,47,000 village panchayats in the country will get Rs 20 lakh per annum for 'Clean India' campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.

Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation Nitin Gadkari made this announcement after participating in the 'Swachh Bharat' cleanliness drive initiated by his ministry officials in the premises of Krishi Bhawan here.

"We have decided that we will provide Rs 20 lakh to each village panchayat and they should make the village clean," Gadkari said.

"We will provide this money yearly and we are going to give money to few villages very soon," the Minister said.

He sought the support of sarpanches, teachers and students in the country's over 2,47,000 gram panchayats for the successful implementation of programme that is to be completed on October 2, 2019, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

"We will complete this mission of cleanliness by taking support of sarpanchs, teachers and students," he said.

"Each gram panchayat will spend Rs 20 lakh. The money will be in the discretion of gram panchayats and they will spend it on sanitation," Gadkari said.

Officials said the money will be provided from a fund of Rs 1,96,000 crore announced by the government for Clean India Mission over a five-year period.

While the Urban Development Ministry will allocate Rs 62,000 crore for cleaning towns across the country, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation will spend Rs 1,34,000 crore for the programme.

Wielding the broom, Modi today launched the country's biggest-ever cleanliness drive, asserting that the "Swachh Bharat" mission is "beyond politics" and inspired by patriotism.
