FIRs against 11 NGOs for funds' misuse

BHOPAL: State Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has registered 11 FIRs against as many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for misusing funds that were allocated to them under central scheme. NGOs had been given money for plantation and setting up nurseries apart from creating awareness about afforestation under Green India Mission.

However, the money was not used for the purpose. After irregularities were detected, EOW registered separate cases against all of them.

GIM is one of eight Missions under National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC). It is a Rs 44,000 crore plan to double country's forest and tree cover in next 10 years. This project aims to restore over 20 million sq km of ecologically degraded land by 2020 with the primary objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sources said.

GIM acknowledges the influences that the forestry sector has on environmental amelioration through climate mitigation, food security, water security, biodiversity conservation and livelihood security of forest dependent communities, sources said.

It puts the "greening" in the context of climate change adaptation and mitigation, meant to enhance ecosystem services like carbon sequestration and storage (in forests and other ecosystems), hydrological services and biodiversity; along with provisioning services like fuel, fodder and small timber.
